GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Adams State Grizzlies fall in Friday night's matchup against Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks came out on top 67-42. The Grizzlies are now 2-8 in RMAC and 2-14 overall.
The game opened up with Colorado Mesa going on a quick 9-0 run.
Makaela Ewing helped the Grizzlies drought, putting up the Grizzlies first six points. Ewing starter her run hitting a good free throw, then a solid three and a layup, each from assists by
Paiton Demps.
Marshell Hollins and
Laura Gutierrez each added to the fun, each adding a bucket each. The Grizzlies ended the quarter trailing 10-19.
Adams State opened the second quarter with Danielle hitting a big three. This gave the Grizzlies a rush of momentum.
Zakiya Beckles hit a fast break three pointer to cut the Maverick lead down to five. Colorado Mesa added four more points before Ewing hit a good jumper. The Grizzlies cut the deficit down to five points again with two good free throws from Demps. The Mavericks battled back and extended their lead, ending the half leading the Grizzlies 35-22.
Adams State stayed consistent in the second half, scoring 10 points in each quarter. The third quarter opened with the Mavericks adding five points quickly on the board. Demps added the Grizzlies first points of the half with a layup. Demps contributed five points to the Grizzlies third quarter total, with Beckles adding four points. Adams State concluded the third quarter trailing 32-51.
The Grizzlies started the final quarter hitting the first points from a layup by Demps. Colorado Mesa continued to add to their lead, gaining their largest margin of 25. The Grizzlies continued to battle with a fastbreak layup from Beckles, then two good free throws from Hollins. The game concluded with Colorado Mesa finishing on top 67-42.
Demps led the Grizzlies on the night with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Beckles finished the night with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Ewing added 8 points to the Grizzlies total, grabbing 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Leading Adams State on the boards was
Ally McKenzie, grabbing 6 rebounds, 2 offensive and 4 defensive.
The Grizzlies will be back out on the court tomorrow, Saturday Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. to take on Western Colorado.
