Adams State Battles against Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. - Adams State Women's Basketball battled it out in Gunnison, Colorado to fall to Western Colorado. Adams State now moves to 2-9 in RMAC and 2-15 overall. 
 
The game opened up with the Mountaineers going on an early 6-0 run. Adams States' Maddie Dorris gave the Grizzlies their first points on the board by making one of her two free throws. Western Colorado continued their run pushing their lead to eight. Zakiya Beckles added on to the Grizzlies score hitting a good jumper. Marshell Hollins helped cut down the Western Colorado lead to 5 when hitting a three. Adams State concluded the first quarter trailing 6-13. 
 
The second quarter opened with Makaela Ewing hitting a jumper. The Mountaineers added seven more points to their score, to give them a lead of nine. Beckles, Maddie Dorris, and Laura Gutierrez tacked on eight more points to the Grizzlies second quarter total. Adams State finished the first half down, 22-31. 
 
Adams State opened the second half with Ally McKenzie scoring the Grizzlies first five points from a layup and three points from the free throw line. Dorris tacked on another two points from a layup and an assist from Paiton Demps. The Mountaineers gained their largest lead of 17 with a minute left in the third quarter. Gutierrez hit her and-one jumper and free throw to cut the deficit down to 14 points. After a good layup from Ewing, Western Colorado quickly answered to end the quarter leading 48-34. 
 
Western Colorado again pushed the pace to gain their largest lead of the game of 21 points. Only a minute into the quarter, Dorris grabbed an offensive rebound to put back up for a layup. Demps and Hollins put up jumpers from within and beyond the arc to add to the Grizzlies final total, 44-61. 
 
Though falling, the Grizzlies were led by Hollins, scoring 9 points while grabbing 3 steals and 2 rebounds. Beckles was also a strong asset to the Grizzlies offense and defense, with 8 points and led the team with 5 rebounds. Dorris put up 7 points on the night, while both Gutierrez and McKenzie added 6 points. Beckles and Demps each led Adams State with 3 assists. 
 
The Grizzlies will be back home next weekend to take on Colorado Christian and Regis University Jan. 24 and 25. Both games are set to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
