ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Adams State Women's Basketball played a tough match against MSU-Denver. The Grizzlies fell 66-58 in four tight quarters play. Adams State falls to 2-5 in RMAC play and 2-11 overall.
The Grizzlies opened up the game with a good jumper from Marshell Hollins. Adams State continued to add to their totals with three's from Laura Gutierrez and Zakiya Beckles. The Roadrunners opened strong, taking a quick lead. The Grizzlies finished the first quarter trailing by one, 17-18.
Adams State continued to trail in the second quarter, but kept MSU-Denver in close range. Hollins led the Grizzlies in the second, scoring all 6 of Adams State's points. The Roadrunners closed the first half pulling away, 34-23.
The Grizzlies came out of the half with momentum, outscoring the Roadrunners 20-14 in the third quarter. Kassie Schell opened the quarter with a solid layup to start the Grizzlies off. With a couple of good free throws from Hollins and two threes from Gutierrez, the Grizzlies cut the Roadrunner lead to four. Beckles and Paiton Demps added to the Grizzlies tally, to end the third quarter trailing 48-43.
The Grizzlies continued to battle throughout the fourth quarter, as did the Roadrunners. MSU-Denver pulled ahead to get a lead of 10 in the quarter. Adams State fought, cutting down the lead a good push from Hollins and Beckles. Adams State fell 66-58.
The Grizzlies were led by Hollins and Beckles, each scoring 18 points on the night. Defensively, Hollins was also a leader with 4 rebounds and many forced turnovers. Schell led the Grizzlies on the boards tonight grabbing 5, two offensive and three defensive. Maddie Dorris and Paiton Demps each had 4 rebounds on the night, both with one offensive and three defensive. Hollins and Ally McKenzie ended the night with two assists.
Adams State will head back on the road next weekend, where they will head to Golden, Colorado and Colorado Springs, to take on Colorado School of Mines and UC-Colorado Springs.
