ALAMOSA, Colo.— A second half surge by the No. 24 Colorado Mesa Mavericks doomed the Adams State University Grizzlies in their final game of 2020 on Friday night. The Mavericks converted in 47 rebounds to get the 66-38 win.
The Grizzlies and Mavericks were tied early in-game, all the way through the score being tied 9-9. However, a late burst saw CMU close out the first quarter with an 8-2 run to take a 17-11 lead. Adams State was only able to score eight points in the second quarter and trailed 30-19 at the half.
The Mavericks then outscored the Grizzlies 16-9 in the third quarter and 20-10 in the fourth to get the win.
Adams State was led in scoring by
Kaela McClure and
Kaitlyn Bell, who scored eight points each while the Mavericks were led by Kylyn Rigsby, who scored 16 points.
As a team, Adams State shot 26.4 percent (14-of-53) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from beyond the arch, and a dismal, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from the charity stripe.
The Grizzlies, who are now 1-2 on the season, will take a holiday break before returning to action in 2021 when they travel to MSU Denver for a matchup with the Roadrunners. The game is slated for Jan. 2 with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
