ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Women's Basketball played a tough game against the Dixie State Lady Buffs on Saturday, Feb. 1. After a long battle, Dixie State ended on top, 65-39.
The Lady Buffs opened the game with an energetic start, scoring 27 in the first quarter. Dixie State got their quick jump scoring the first five points of the game.
Zakiya Beckles soon answered with a good three to put the Grizzlies on the board. Dixie State followed with a 16-0 run. Despite many attempts, Grizzlies could not get a shot to fall.
Ally McKenzie put an end to the Grizzlies drought hitting a big three with an assist from
Danielle Jimenez. Adams State ended the first quarter trailing 6-27.
The Grizzlies opened the second quarter with a layup from
Kassie Schell. The Grizzlies continued to battle up and down the court, putting up eight more points in the quarter.
Paiton Demps added a solid layup along with Jimenez nailing a three. Both McKenzie and Beckles scored from the free throw line, putting the Grizzlies down 16-45 at half.
Adams State played the second half with determination and grit, outscoring the Lady Buffs in the third and fourth quarters.
Laura Gutierrez, Demps and Beckles turned it on offensively in the third quarter, adding 14 to the Grizzly total. Gutierrez began the quarter with a big and-one, adding three point to the board. Both Demps and Beckles attacked the basket, each going 2-2 from the free throw line. Adams State played some good defense, earning them a defensive rebound resulting in a fastbreak. With about a minute remaining in the quarter, Beckles and Gutierrez each hit jumpers from the field. The Grizzlies ended the quarter trailing 30-57.
The Grizzlies passed the ball around in the fourth quarter, adding nine points to their total. McKenzie entered the fourth, scoring a layup to get the Grizzlies started. From there Beckles added a three, Demps made a layup, and
Marshell Hollins tallied two good free throws. The Grizzlies ended the game falling 39-65.
Although it is not seen in statistics, the Grizzlies had some tremendous buildups both offensively and defensively. Both
Maddie Dorris and
Makaela Ewing had some phenomenal screens to open opportunities for the Grizzlies offensively. Adams State also had great sequences of shutdown defense and solid communication around screens and switches.
Beckles led the Grizzlies on the scoreboard tonight tallying 13 points, while going 4-4 from the line. Demps followed with 8 points and grabbed 5 defensive rebounds. Gutierrez put up five points and came down with 6 rebounds. Beckles, McKenzie and Gutierrez each had two steals on the night as well.
The Grizzlies will bounce back next weekend as they travel to Denver, Colorado to challenge Regis University and Colorado Christian.
