ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Women's Basketball fall to the Westminster Griffins tonight at home. The Grizzlies played tough and made a big leap at the end of the game that wasn't enough. Adams State is now 3-11 in RMAC and 3-4 at home.
Adams State started out with a close game. The Griffins were the first to get points on the board with a layup in the paint. Adams State answered with a three from
Paiton Demps. The Grizzlies jumped into action with
Marshell Hollins grabbing a steal and getting it to
Danielle Jimenez for a good layup. After the Griffins added a layup,
Laura Gutierrez hit a three to put the Grizzlies up 8-4. The Griffins came back, hitting a layup and jumper to tie the game at eight. With three minutes left in the first quarter, the Griffins turned it on going on a 7-0 run to end the quarter up 15-8.
Westminster came out with momentum in the second quarter and couldn't miss, making their first seven points. Gutierrez went 2-2 from the free throw line to cut the Griffin lead to 12. Westminster continued to push, going on a 15-2 run with
Ally McKenzie of the Grizzlies attacking the paint to get a layup for the Grizzlies.
Kassie Schell ended the Grizzlies first second quarter going 2-2 from the line. The Grizzlies trailed 14-36 heading into the half.
Adams State came out in the second half more than doubling their first half score. The Grizzlies opened the third quarter with a fastbreak layup from Hollins off a steal. McKenzie put up five more points, with a good layup and a solid three. Adams State added to their total with
Zakiya Beckles grabbing a steal and getting it down the court to Gutierrez for a fastbreak layup. After a
Makaela Ewing offensive layup, Demps closed the third quarter with a layup, putting the Grizzlies down 28-51.
The Grizzlies outscored the Griffins in the fourth quarter 19-12. The Grizzlies shared the ball and attacked the basket, scoring 12 of their points from layups. McKenzie hit a good jumper, Gutierrez hit two more free throws and Ewing added one from behind the arc. The Grizzlies finished the game falling 63-47.
Gutierrez led the Grizzlies on the night with 11 points, three steals and went 4-4 from the free throw line. Adding to the offense was McKenzie, putting up 9 points, with 2 steals and 2 rebounds. Demps was also a highlight to the Grizzlies offense, scoring 7 points with two steals and 3 rebounds. Schell led the Grizzlies on the boards, coming down with 5 rebounds, three offensive and two defensive. Hollins and Beckles were also leader on the team, with Hollins grabbing three steals and Beckles with three assists.
The Grizzlies will be back at it again tomorrow night, Saturday, Feb. 1. The Grizzlies will welcome the new month wearing pink for their "Think Pink" games as they take on Dixie State.
