ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies Men's and Women's Track & Field teams are back in action this weekend from both the University of New Mexico and the University of Washington. The Grizzlies will travel their sprinters and field athletes to the University of New Mexico for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, competing in Albuquerque for the second consecutive weekend. The distance athletes will travel to Seattle for the Husky Classic at the University of Washington, a meet that the runners have historically competed very well at in recent years.
The sprints squad led by RMAC Track Athlete of the Week
Jonah Vigil head back to Albuquerque looking to improve upon a good weekend overall last weekend. For some, it will be the third straight competition at the Univeristy of New Mexico, so the athletes should be very comfortable with the facility as well as the banked surface. For Vigil, a New Mexico native, he ran one of the best performances for a freshman sprinter in Adams State history, placing 4
th in the 400 meter final with a time of 47.78, and running the 13th fastest time out of 98 athletes that competed in the 200, with a time of 21.43. On the women's side, Owenika Watson hopes to have a big weekend in both the 60 meter hurdles as well as in the women's long jump.
Historically in Seattle, the Grizzlies' distance squad has run very well. Last season,
Roisin Flanagan ran one of the best collegiate races of her career on the same track the Grizzlies will compete on this weekend, setting a new Adams State record in the 3K with a time of 9:18.24. Last weekend in Albuquerque, the runners got some fantastic performances from both
Carson Bix on the men's side and
Haleigh Hunter-Galvan on the women's side. In the Men's mile, Bix won the race outright, with a time of 4:08.17. One of the Grizzlies' best, Bix hopes to have an even better weekend in Seattle beginning on Friday. In the Women's 3K,
Haleigh Hunter-Galvan also took home an outright victory, winning in dominant fashion with a time of 9:50.72, winning by over seven seconds. Galvan is the Grizzlies' most seasoned runner currently on the women's indoor roster, and hopes to lead the charge toward a second-straight indoor national title for the Lady Grizzlies.
The Don Kirby Elite Invitational from Albuquerque, New Mexico begins tomorrow, February 13
th and runs through Friday. The Husky Classic from Seattle begins Friday, February 14
th and runs through Saturday. The Men come into the weekend currently ranked 16
th overall, having moved up nine spots from last week. The Women enter the weekend ranked 9
th overall, with hopes to move up in the rankings. With the RMAC meet looming, the Grizzlies hope that they can have a great weekend from two separate meets, and be fully prepared for championship season.
