SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Adams State Women's Basketball falls to Westminster in tonight's matchup in Salt Lake City. The Grizzlies battled hard, but the Griffins came out on top 65-44.
Westminster College came out and played tough defense on the Grizzlies, only allowing 6 points in the first quarter.
Marshell Hollins opened the game for the Grizzlies responding to the Griffins first two points with a good jumper by the assist from
Kassie Schell. Adams State answered the Griffins 8-0 run with layups from
Maddie Dorris and
Danielle Jimenez. The Griffins ended the quarter leading the Grizzlies 14-6.
Adams State worked back, scoring 17 to the Griffins 14 points in the second quarter. Hollins hit a three with an assist by
Paiton Demps to open the quarter for the Grizzlies. Dorris and Demps each put up a layup to add to the Grizzlies total, in addition to jumpers from
Makaela Ewing and
Laura Gutierrez and threes from
Zakiya Beckles and Hollins. The Grizzlies cut the Griffin lead to 5 before moving into the second half, trailing 28-25.
The Griffins again came out with strong defense, limiting the Grizzlies total points for the quarter to 6. Demps gave the Grizzlies their first points of the quarter with a good layup. Westminster concluded the third quarter going on a 11-4 run, with two good layups from Beckels. The Grizzlies trailed the Griffins 44-29 as they ended the third.
Hollins went off in the fourth, scoring 11 of the Grizzlies 15 points of the quarter. Demps went 1-2 from the line in the final quarter and Gutierrez added a three to complete Adams State's final, falling 65-44. The Grizzlies are now 3-16 in RMAC.
Marshell Hollins led the Grizzlies on the night, almost reaching a double-double with 19 points and 9 rebounds. This was her highest scoring and rebounding game of the season. Second on the scoreboard tonight was Beckles, with 7 points, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds. Demps and Gutierrez each had 5 points apiece. Jinenez and Schell each came down with 6 rebounds.
The Grizzlies will come back home to take on Western Colorado and Colorado Mesa next weekend, Feb. 21 and 22 in Plachy Hall.
