ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Women's Basketball plays Western Colorado tough in Friday, Feb 21 matchup. The Grizzlies battled hard throughout three quarters but fell in the fourth quarter 43-62.
Adams State opened the first quarter outscoring the Mountaineers 15-14. The Grizzlies got started from a seven point deficit.
Laura Gutierrez ended the Grizzly drought with a layup in the paint. Adams State went on a 15-7 run with assistance from layups from
Paiton Demps and
Laura Gutierrez and a three from
Zakiya Beckles.
Beginning the second quarter leading 15-14, the score was tied twice within the quarter.
Ally McKenzie opened the quarter with a jumper to put the Grizzlies up by three. Western Colorado hit a big three to tie the game at 17.
Makaela Ewing tacked on four points to tie the game again at 22. The Mountaineers regained their lead, and extended it to five.
Marshell Hollins ended the second quarter with two good free throws, cutting the Mountaineer lead to three, 24-27.
Adams State opened the third quarter scoring a big 17 points over the Mountaineer's 13. The Grizzlies opened with a 10-3 run. McKenzie hit two solid jumpers, with Demps tacking on two good free throws, and Gutierrez added a layup and a free throw to the Grizzly's run. Tying the score twice more, Adams State ended the quarter with two good free throws from
Kassie Schell, and a huge three from half court by
Zakiya Beckles.
Adams State led the Mountaineers 41-40 heading into the fourth quarter. Western Colorado hoped into a new gear in the fourth quarter, starting with an 8-2 run over the Grizzlies.
Maddie Dorris went 2-2 from the line to add to the Grizzlies total. Adams State lost their momentum, while the Mountaineers pushed 14 more points to their total. The Grizzlies lost a heartbreaker to Western Colorado 43-62
Offensively, the Grizzlies were led by Gutierrez totaling 13 points, going 4-6 from the free throw line. McKenzie was a big influence both offensively and defensively, scoring 7 points and coming down with 7 rebounds, 3 offensive and 4 defensive. Demps and Hollins each played a role; Demps ended the night with 4 points and 4 rebounds and Hollins with 3 points and 3 rebounds. Dorris led the Grizzlies going 2-2 from the line and racked up 2 blocks.
The Grizzlies will be back out on the floor tomorrow night to take on Colorado Mesa. Tipoff is set to start at 5:30.
