ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Women's Basketball played a close game with Colorado Mesa Saturday, Feb. 22. The Grizzlies battled hard, falling 63-51. Adams State now falls back to 3-18 in RMAC.
 
Colorado Mesa got the game started with a quick three to open the first quarter. 
Zakiya Beckles scored the first points for Adams State with a layup, then followed with a big three and another good drive to the hole. Trailing 16-7, 
Marshell Hollins and 
Ally McKenzie each added two points to cut the Maverick lead to five. 
Makaela Ewing went 4-4 from the line in the first quarter, cutting the lead to three points. 
Maddie Dorris scored the final points of the quarter with a layup cutting Colorado Mesa's lead to one, 18-17.
 
The Mavericks opened the second quarter with an 8-4 run, extending their lead back to five. The Grizzlies fought hard and attacked the basket, finding easy layups for McKenzie and 
Kassie Schell. Beckles put up another five points in the quarter from two good free throws and a three. Adams State trailed at the end of the second 33-26.
 
Dorris got the Grizzlies started in the second half with an and one, three-point play. The Mavericks went on to close the third quarter scoring 16 points. The Grizzlies fought back, adding a three from 
Laura Gutierrez, a layup from 
Paiton Demps, and another good free throw by Dorris. The Grizzlies finished the third trailing 49-35.
 
Demps began the fourth quarter with a good layup, followed by a layup from Gutierrez. 
Laura Gutierrez went on to score eight more points for the Grizzlies in the quarter, adding to Adams State's total of 16 points over the Mavericks 14 in the quarter. The Grizzlies finished the game strong, though falling 63-51.
 
Gutierrez and Beckles led the Grizzlies on the scoreboard. Gutierrez totaled 13 points with 3 steals and 4 rebounds. Beckles ended the night with 12 points and some good fastbreak pushes. Demps and Dorris each put up 7 points on the night. Ewing and Demps led the Grizzlies in rebounds, each coming down with six boards each, Ewing with 5 defensive and 1 offensive, and Demps with 4 defensive and 2 offensive. The Grizzlies did a great job of moving the ball and finding the insides tonight scoring 22 points in the paint, and making it the free throw line 20 times tonight.
 
The Grizzlies will host their final game of the season next Friday, Feb. 28 against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks. Tipoff is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
