WBB | ASU’s fourth-quarter rally falls short

WICHITA FALLS, Texas-- Adams State almost survived two, 10-point deficits and a cold-shooting second quarter. But Midwestern State's Morgan Lenahan sank two free throws with 13 seconds left to help give the Mustangs a 67-65 win over the Grizzlies in the closing game of  the Ashbrook Classic Nov. 13.

The Mustangs improved to 2-0, while the Grizzlies fell to 0-2,.

The last two minutes were rather frantic for both teams.

ASU's Elaina Watson had 15 points to lead her team in scoring before she fouled out. Kayla Harris added 12, and Elaina Ruiz threw in 11. Lenahan scored a game-high 18 points for the Mustangs. Hannah Reynolds added 15.

ASU was as proficient from the floor in the fourth quarter as it wasn't in the second. The Grizzlies scored 10 of the first 12 points to pull into a tie with the homesteading Mustangs. But the issue was settled in the last two minutes. After building a five-point lead, the Grizzlies saw the margin shrink to one with 1:40 to play. Harris made a layup with 38 seconds left to give the Grizzlies a three-point lead.

The Mustangs cut the lead to a single point, and Adams State missed a free throw with 21 seconds left. After an ASU foul, Morgan Lenahan made the two free throws with 13 seconds left.

Both teams started the second half with long scoring droughts. The Mustangs' lasted longer .. almost five minutes .. and that allowed Demi Black and Kaela McClure of the Grizzlies to cut Midwestern State's lead to four. Shawnisay Millar of Midwestern State scored five consecutive points to restore order.

ASU put together one more sport as the third quarter wound down. Ruiz drained a 3-pointer to help cut the Mustangs' lead to five. King and Millar answered with consecutive baskets to bring the lead back to eight.

The second quarter was a tough one for ASU, which had a 16-11 lead early in the second period. The Grizzlies couldn't overcome a serious case of cold shooting. ASU made one of its first eight field-goal attempts, which allowed the Mustangs to score 10 unanswered points.

The Grizzlies' Stephanie Ruiz tossed in a pair of 3-pointers, while Davis and Harris added baskets to cut the gap to two points with about half of the second quarter to play. The Mustangs answered that surge by scoring 10 of the remaining 14 points in the half. Lenahan had four of those points for Midwestern State, and Reynolds scored the last four to give the Mustangs an eight-point lead at intermission.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair. Midwestern State's Frances King scored seven of her team's first 11 points in the opening quarter. Two freshmen, Watson and Nyeniea John, helped the Grizzlies to a 13-11 lead after the opening period.

Northern New Mexico College comes to Plachy Hall to face Adams State at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16.
