PUEBLO, Colo.—Adams State's
Rylan O'Brien tied a career-high as he scored 29 points to lead the Grizzlies to a 92-80 win over Bacone College in the first of two games at the Al Kay Shine Classic at Colorado State University Pueblo on Friday afternoon.
It was the Grizzlies' first win of the season.
Jordan Notch, senior starting forward, added 19 points to the Grizzlies' cause. He also yanked down a team-high 11 rebounds. Junior Cody Frederickson dished out five assists.
D'von LaPointe led the Warriors with 19 points. Derek Factor added 14, and Daice Marshall scored a dozen.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first half. The Grizzlies made 19-of-35 shots from the floor en route to a 10-point halftime lead. The Warriors made 15 of their 27 tries.
ASU pulled away by outsourcing the Warriors 13-0 midway through the first half.
Hayden Meakes started the spurt with four straight points. He finished with eight.
Malik Moore added two of his seven points, and O'Brien added six of his 29 points, including a 3-pointer.
The Warriors rallied in the second half. They took a five-point lead after a Malik Norfleet layup with a bit more than eight minutes to play. ASU tied the score twice, the last coming after an O'Brien free throw with four minutes left.
Nykolas Lange added a 3-pointer on the Grizzlies' next possession to give ASU the lead for good as the Grizzlies hit four straight treys including three by O'Brien.
ASU improves to 1-2 this season, while Bacone College remained winless.
ASU faces Spurgeon College in the Grizzlies' second tournament game Saturday, Nov. 20. Tip time is 3 p.m.
