BAYAMON, P.R.— Adams State University rode an 18-point performance from
Rylan O'Brien to a tough, 67-63 win over the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras early on Friday morning.
Malik Moore added a dozen, and
Hayden Meakes threw in 10. Adrian Ocasio led all scorers with 27 points for the Roosters. Gian Rivera was next with seven.
The win was the Grizzlies' third straight. They are 3-2.
It wasn't an easy win for Adams State. The Grizzlies enjoyed a 15-point lead after a pair of free throws by
Nykolas Lange and a Moore bucket with less than 16:00 left in the second half. UPRRP chipped away at the lead and finally caught the Grizzlies at 62 after an Angel Gonzalez free throw with six minutes left. It was the fifth tie of the contest.
The Roosters took a two-point lead with five minutes to play, and Gonzalez was responsible. His basket was the eighth lead change of the game. Meakes tied the game with four and a half minutes left, only to see Gonzalez give the Roosters a two-point lead with a bit more than four minutes left.
O'Brien cashed in a couple of free throws to forge a tie at 63. Moore added two more from the charity stripe to give the Grizzlies the lead for good with two minutes left, and O'Brien added two late free throws for the final margin of victory.
Adams State shot 55 percent from the floor against the Roosters. The Grizzlies outrebounded UPPR 28-21. Moore led the way for ASU with nine boards. Ocasio led UPRRP with seven caroms.
The Grizzlies wrap up their two-game tournament stop in Puerto Rico with a game against the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Tip time is at 7 a.m. (MT) Saturday, Nov. 27.
