SALT LAKE CITY – A strong shooting performance by Westminster hurt the Adams State Grizzlies in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action on Friday night inside Behnken Field House as they fell 68-45.
Adams State, who is now 2-6 on the season, saw a strong shooting performance by
Elaina Watson, who was 5-of-11 from the field. The Griffins, now 8-3 on the season, were led in scoring by Sarah McGinley, who scored 17 points.
Adams State came out looking good as they took a 5-2 lead early thanks in part to a four-point performance from center
Kaitlyn Bell. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, Westminster finished the quarter with a 13-3 run including a three-pointer at the buzzer to take an 18-10 lead.
The Griffins then took complete control of the game as they held the Grizzlies scoreless for 7:04 in which they went on a 10-0 run. The run was finally broken by a free throw by
Laura Gutierrez. They trailed 34-18 at the half.
The Griffins continued to take the lead in the third but Adams State seemed to find a small spark as they went on a 6-0 run scoring three layups in less than 56 seconds to cut into the lead. The Grizzlies were outscored 9-8 in the fourth quarter in the defeat.
As a team, Adams State shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field, 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from beyond the arch, and 60 percent (9-of-15) from the free-throw line. They did outrebound the Griffins 11 to 8.
The Grizzlies will return to action tomorrow when they travel back to Colorado to take on the Colorado Mesa Mavericks. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
