GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A hot start dwindled for the Adams State University Grizzlies as they fell to the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, 60-38, on Saturday night. The Grizzlies are now 2-7 on the season and in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Laura Gutierrez was a shining spot in the loss for the Grizzlies as she tied a career-high for three-pointers made in a game with five. She hit 5-of-9 from beyond the arch, 5-of-10 from the field, to be the team and game-high scorer with 15 points.
Adams State looking good early took a 6-2 lead as they came out looking for the ball. They forced four early turnovers. The Mavericks then went on a 16-3 run to end the quarter thanks in part to unforced turnovers to put them down 18-9 at the end of the first frame.
Adams State scored the first two points of the second quarter but then the Mavericks went on a 19-0 run over 9:16 and took a 37-11 lead at the half.
The quarter started out dismal for the Grizzlies as they shot 1-of-11 from the field before a 5-0 run late but they still trailed 49-26 headed into the fourth. The Grizzlies outscored the Mavericks 12-11 in the fourth.
Kelsey Siemons led a balanced offensive attack with 15 points while Morgan Myers-Pack had 14 off the bench, thanks largely to 4-for-5 3-point shooting. Sierra McNicol also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Natalie Bartle chipped in 11.
The Mavericks forced 23 Grizzly turnovers abut overcame a season-high 30 turnovers of their own.
