WBB | Grizzlies fall to Mountaineers in Gunnison

GUNNISON, Colo.—Despite a career day by senior Paiton Demps, the No. 1 Western Colorado University Mountaineers celebrated their senior night with an 83-70 over the Adams State University Grizzlies on Saturday inside Paul Wright Gymnasium.

Demps, who finished the game as the second-highest scorer for the Grizzlies, had 13 points to best her pervious performance of 11 points. She set a career-high with two three-pointers.

The Grizzly starters showed little fatigue from Friday night's triple overtime game as they lead 13-5 thanks in part to three three-pointers. The Mountaineers rallied back and cut the lead to 13-12.  The two teams traded shots and despite the drastic foul differential, Adams State led 20-18 after one.

Several offensive miscues saw both teams were held scoreless 3:18 of the second quarter before Nageak hit two free throws. The Mountaineers countered with a 5-0 run to take the lead 23-22. The Grizzlies then had the officials grant Western four straight free throws as they grew the lead to 26-22. The Mountaineers relied on the heavily on the long-range artillery of Emmery Wagstaff, who was a perfect 6-of-6 from beyond the arch to pace Western Colorado to a 41-31 lead at the break.

Western Colorado rattled off ten straight points to start to the second half and take a 20-point lead. Laura Gutierrez, who was held scoreless until 3:57 mark of the third, then on a 9-0 run of her own to cut the lead down to 11. Despite 13 points in the quarter by Gutierrez, the Mountaineers led 61-46 entering the final frame.

In the fourth saw Adams State outscore Western 24-22 but the hole was too big.

Adams State finished the game shooting 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field. For the second straight day Gutierrez was the leading scorer with 20 points.

The Grizzlies will have one more road game, which is scheduled for Monday when they travel to CSU Pueblo with tip-off against the ThunderWolves set for 5:30 p.m.
