GOLDEN, Colo.—The Adams State University volleyball team competed in two matches Sunday. As the Grizzlies put up a good fight, they fell in both games at the Lockridge Arena. The Grizzlies are now 0-11 on the season, they dropped a three-set match to Colorado School of Mines and a five-set match against Chadron State University.
Colorado School of Mines 3, Adams State 0
Adams State battled competitively in their opening match of the day but took a fall to No. 6 ranked Colorado School of Mines by scores of 25-8, 25-21,25-15.
The Grizzlies finished with 25 total kills in the match as
Alexandra MacAskill had 7 kills followed by
Shannon Mulkey,
Natalie Gallegos, and
Anna Huggins as each had 5 kills.
The first set the Grizzlies were off to a good start as they got their momentum going before Colorado Mines began to take the lead 15-5. The Grizzlies tried to rally back, but the Orediggers were on a roll.
The second set the Grizzlies tried their best to not let Colorado Mines open up a lead, beginning the set in a tied position. The Grizzlies began to be more assertive as they pulled away and took the lead, then began to switch of the lead back and forth with the Orediggers. With a couple of last surges CSM won the set 25-21.
Adams State continued to fight back in the third set falling a couple of points behind Mines. The Grizzlies did not back down, as they consistently kept passing the ball in order to create opportunities to send the ball over the net. Mines began to pull away as they won the set 25-15 winning them the game 3-0.
Chadron 3, Adams State 2
The Grizzlies were off to a good start and won the first set of the match, they then made a comeback and won the fourth set. Chadron won the second, third, and fifth set as the Grizzlies took a fall by score of 25-20, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22,16-14.
In the first set the Grizzlies started off on fire as they scored the first two point just within minutes of beginning the match. Adams State kept the momentum going and slowly began to develop a lead over the Eagles. The match became close in range as the game began to intensify, the Grizzlies won the first set 25-20.
The Grizzlies looked forward to building off the first set as they continued to power throughout the second set. Within minutes of the second set the Grizzlies began a lead 2-1 over the Eagles. ASU led the way consistently throughout the second set, until the Eagles turned things around and took the lead 19-18. The Grizzlies continued to battle but the Eagles won the second set 25-23.
During the third set the Eagles were more assertive as they took the lead early on. The competition was fierce as both teams brought the heat rattling up kills. The remainder of the set consisted of both teams switching off the lead, but the Eagles pulled in a score of 25-21 as they won the third set.
The fourth set the Grizzlies took a 0-4 lead early on in the match, ASU kept the lead winning them the match 25-22, which tied the game. Going into the fifth set the pressure was on as both teams continued to be highly competitive. The Eagles took the lead but the set eventually leveled out in a tie. The Grizzlies made a strong comeback but the Eagles won the set 16-14 winning them the match.
The Grizzlies will be back in action on their home court on March 11 as they take on Colorado State University-Pueblo in a match at Plachy Hall at 6:00 p.m.
