ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The Adams State men and women's track & field team are winding down to the championship portion of their season. Multiple Grizzlies put out their best efforts this week as new personal records were set along with more Grizzlies placing themselves in a good position for nationals at the end of May.
In the field events
John Hochanadel finished third in the men's shot put with a final throw reaching 15.51 meters. James Hochanadel finished in fifth as he threw 14.41 meters, followed by Sam Dirkes throwing 14.23 meters. In the men's long jump the lone Grizzly
Camwrin Harris had a top five finish, as he placed fifth with a final jump of 6.52 meters.
In the women's 1500 meters
Roisin Flanagan made an appearance on the track and had an outstanding performance as she finished in first place with a final time of 4:23.27. After a six second conversion both Flanagan's will be sitting in the top two spots for nationals. Some of the other Grizzlies who also competed in this event were
Nicole Lawrence (4:31.97),
Stephanie Cotter (4:33.57), Emma Wren (4:34.68), and
Morgan Hykes (4:35.54) who are still in the standing for nationals with provisional times. Lawrence came back after an impressive 1500 and competed in the women's 800 meters finishing in fourth with a final time of 2:12.70, following closely after was Wren posting a time of 2:14.89,
Jessica Simon finished ninth with a time of 2:20.08, and Hykes also competed in this event finishing with a final time of 2:21.83.
On the men's side the Grizzlies put four in the top five in the men's 1500-meter, all hitting times well under the provisional standard. James Dunne led the Grizzlies in this race as he finished in second with a time of 3:49.03, followed by
David Cardenas in third (3:50.84), Miguel Coca in fourth (3:50.89), and
Andrew O'Keefe in fifth (3:53.44).
There were two Grizzlies who competed in the women's 5000 meters setting new personal records.
Reina Paredes finished in second as she posted a time of 18:37.26, followed by
Amalia Dorion in third posting a time of 18:39.62. In the men's 5000 meters,
Yonas Haile lead the Grizzlies finishing in first with a time of 14:45.17.
Alec Hall took second posting a time of 14:56.46, followed by
Devin Paredes in third (14:56.67), Mikah Paiz in fourth (15:01.32), and Elijah De La Cerda in fifth posting a final time of 15:07.11.
In the women's 3000-meter steeple there was a phenomenal performance by
Erin Stonebarger as she set a new personal record with a final time of 12:04.20, followed by
Paige Morales who also competed in this event posting a final time of 13:07.05.
The Grizzlies set a new personal record in the men's 4x100 meters with a team that consisted of Elliot Leroy,
Jordan Spencer,
Eric Williams, and
Jonah Vigil. The Grizzlies finished in third posting a final time of 41.90.
There were some exceptional performances in the men's 110-meter hurdles, with multiple personal bests among the Grizzly men. Leroy Elliot ran 14.57 setting a new personal best finishing in third, closely followed by
Jordan Spencer with a time of 15.02.
David Varner (15.62) and
Neveh Jones (15.77) also set new personal bests as they competed in this event. Jones then came back and competed in the men's 400-meter hurdles as he finished third with a final time of 54.98.
Two Grizzlies competed in the men's 400-meters, both setting new personal standards.
Keilin Jones posted a final time of 49.71, closely followed by
Eric Williams as he ran a final time of 49.72.
Alese Sartain competed in the women's 100-meters as she set a new personal best running a final time of 12:43,
Caelyn Gomez who also competed in this event finished with a final time of 12.81. Sartain and Gomez also competed in the women's 200-meter dash, as Sartain posted a time of 25.87, and Gomez ran a final time of 26.82.
On the men's side
Jonah Vigil came back and competed in the men's 100-meters running a remarkable race as he ran a new personal best posting a time of 10.42. Leroy Elliot finished with a final time of 11.20, followed by
Camwrin Harris posting a final time of 11.38, as they also doubled up and competed in this event. Vigil continues to represent the Grizzlies well as he also sets a new personal best in the men's 200-meter dash with a final time of 21.01.
Finishing off the day was the 4x400 meters, in which the Grizzlies had a men and women's team compete in. In the women's 4x400 team finished in fourth with a final time of 4:13.16 and the men's team finished second with a final time of 3:21.34.
Up Next, the distance crew will be competing this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa as they compete at Drake Relays. The Grizzlies will then be preparing to step back on track on April 30
th as they will begin the championship portion of their season competing in Pueblo Colorado at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship.
