VB | Grizzlies win RMAC opener at CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo—The Adams State University volleyball team opened up the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season on Tuesday night when they traveled to Lakewood and earned a four-set win over the Cougars. The Grizzlies won with set scores of 13-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-9.
 
The Cougars jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead but the Grizzlies came back and tied the match at three. CCU retook the lead and led by as many as three points but the game was tied on an ace by Madeleine Benally before Alexandria MacAskill gave the Grizzlies their first lead of the game.
 
The Cougars then capitalized on a rally that saw the ball make a trip over the net 15 times and took a 15-10 lead. The lead just continued to grow as the Grizzlies fell 25-13. They Grizzlies were only able to muster up five kills compared to the Cougars 15.
 
The CCU team rallied off seven straight points and overtook the Grizzlies after they 4-3. With the score 10-4, the Grizzlies rallied off a 3-0 run of their own to chip into the lead. The two teams battled but thanks in part to back-to-back blocks by the Cougars, CCU took a 15-12 lead. After finding themselves down big the Grizzlies went on a 10-3 run and gained the win 25-22. The set saw the Grizzlies post 11 kills and five blocks.
 
The third set saw the Grizzlies passing come together as they jumped on the Cougars in the middle of the set and took momentum for a lead before the Cougars rallied and took a 21-19 lead and win 25-23.
 
The fourth set saw Adams State secure 15 kills to win the set 25-20.
 
The fifth set saw the Grizzlies jumped out to a 5-1 lead before a timeout attempted to slow them down. Adams State scored two more before the Cougars jumped on the scoreboard. CCU closed within three, 8-5. The Grizzlies kept momentum and got the win.
 
MacAskill was the leading attacker for the Grizzlies as she had 10 kills while Sai Collins and Chasey Blach each had nine.
