ALAMOSA, Colo.—Despite their best showing of the season with four interceptions by the defense, the Adams State University Grizzly Football team could not hold the Mountaineers of Western Colorado at bay as they escaped Rex Field with a rivalry win with a 24-10 game on Saturday evening.
With the win the Mountaineers won their fifth game out of the last 20 and keep the series lead with their 41st win over the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies had won every showdown since 2016. They improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Grizzlies fall to 0-3 and 0-1 in the RMAC.
The visitors jumped on the scoreboard first as they connected on a nine-yard pass that capped off a 12-play drive that ate up 5:32 on the clock.
Adams State rattled back as
Bryce Hampton was able to get a pick six from 28-yard yards away to tie the game. Western countered with ten straight points to take a 17-7 lead.
Zachary Survillas cut the lead down to one possession on a 48-yard kick on a 20-second, five-play drive to end the half.
Adams State then played their stellar defense that saw the Grizzlies get three interceptions and two punts, however, the ability to capitalize on those opportunities was a hinderance as they were forced to leave five drives with zero points to show for it as they missed two field goals and punted the ball twice.
The Grizzlies finished the game with 311 total yards of offense including 177 on the ground and 134 through the air.
Tyreik Campbell was the top rusher as he finished the night with a 5.3 average per carry as he gained 117 yards on 18 attempts for 114 yards. John Buska made his season debut with a 13-of-39 showing through the air.
The Grizzlies will look for their first win of the season when they travel to Spearfish, S.D. to take on the Yellow Jackets. Kick off is slated for 12:00 p.m. at Lyle Hare Stadium.
