ALAMOSA, Colo. - It had all the numbers of an old-fashioned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football game.
Instead, it was an,old-fashioned RMAC slugfest between Adams State University and Colorado Mesa University at Rex Field Oct. 22. And when the game ended, ASU was on top 45-31, their first win over the Mavericks since 2013, more than 3,200 days ago.
The two teams played to a 17-17 tie after the first half. But the Grizzlies scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, including a 75-yard scoring pass from
Marckell Grayson to
Elijah Harper.
Grayson was 20-for-33 for 303 yards and three touchdowns. One went to
Kentrell Petite. He finished with eight receptions and 103 yards. Harper caught four passes for 79 yards.
Dequan Hopkins caught Grayson's other scoring pass, one of Hopkins' three receptions for 41 yards.
Mavericks' quarterback Karst Hunter (also the team's leading rusher) was 28-for-50 for 325 yards and a touchdown, which went to Markel Quinney. Hunter scored two rushing touchdowns and gained 84 yards on 18 carries. Julien Ison carried the ball 15 times and gained 65 yards and scored a touchdown.
The Grizzlies, who converted six of their 15 chances on third down, finished with 399 yards of total offense, the majority of which was courtesy of Grayson's passing. The Mavericks, who were seven of 15 on third down, picked up 474 yards of total offense.
ASU takes its 2-6 record (2-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) into a contest at the South Dakota School of Mines. Kickoff is set for noon Saturday, Oct. 29.
