SILVER CITY, N.M.— Despite taking an 8-point lead early in the second half by the Adams State University men's basketball team, a 15-0 run by the host Western New Mexico Mustangs was too much to overcome in the Lone Star/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Challenge. The Mustangs finished the game with a 90-72 win.
The first half looked like it was going to be a blowout as the Mustangs took a ten-point lead, 29-19, with 8:30 left. The Grizzlies countered over the next seven minutes as they went on a 15-10 run to get their biggest lead of the half of five at 44-39. The Grizzlies led 44-43 as they hit 18-of-30 (60 percent) from the field.
The second half started strong for the Grizzlies as they led by eight, 53-45, with 17:38 left. The Mustangs battled back with a 15-0 run and eventually jumped out to a 26-point lead, 88-62 with 3:45 left in the game.
The Grizzlies were led by Lamont Sanders, who had 18 points, while Isaiah Sampson scored 17 points and Kaleb Mitchell scored 10 points.
The Grizzlies will look to rebound next Friday (Nov. 19) when they take on Texas Permian Basin at 7:30 p.m. in Durango, Colo.
