TF | Grizzlies compete at Western

GUNNISON, Colo.—In what was the Adams State Grizzlies' first competition in the 2022 portion of their 2022-23  Indoor Track and Field season, both the men and women had a good start to their season as they were at the Western Colorado Open. The Grizzlies featured some impressive performances, with several hitting NCAA Provisional Marks.
 
The field events go the Grizzlies off to a good start as in the men's weighted throw James Waddles had a great start to the season as he placed ninth overall with a throw of 13.14 meters. Sam Dirkes made a statement in the men's shot put as he placed first with a throw of 16.98 meters. James Hochanadel placed fourth with an impressive throw of 15.26 meter. Waddles also competed in this event as he placed fifth with a throw of 14.44 meters.
 
Laura Galvan is a Grizzly to keep an eye out for as she competed in the women's weight throw. Galvan came ready to compete as she powered through and earned herself a fourth place finish with a throw of 14.43 meters.
 
In the women's 60- meter dash Alese Sartain got off the blocks to a fast start and gave her all until the finish as she placed second  with a time of 7.75.
 
 Amalia Dorion took the lead early on in the women's mile as she led wire to wire to run an impressive time of 5:16.15.
 
In the women's 3,000 meter run there were multiple top finishes as these Grizzlies set themselves off for a good start to the season. Brianna Robles broke the facility record, which was set last year by Robles with a time of 9:55.15. With the help of her teammates Robles set a new record with a time of 9:47.67. Precious Robinson ran a new personal record as she stayed consistent throughout the race and finished second with a time of 9:58.30, followed by Reina Paredes who had showed great efforts as she finished strong to a third place finish with a time of 10:02.27. Emily Schoellkopf stayed close to Paredes to earn a fourth place finish with a new personal record of 10:02.31. Erin Stonebarger showed great efforts as well as she finished 6th overall with a time of 10:50.37. Most of the marks set today by these women will set in good position leading towards the rest of the season as they hit NCAA provisional marks.
 
In the men's 60-meter dash Jonah Vigil led the way to a first  place finish with a time of 6.82. In the men's 400 meter dash Chad Jackson shower great efforts as he finished fifth with a time of 51.01, followed by Neveh Jones who finished 11th with a time of 52.12. In the men's 4x400 meter relay took a 3- second win with a time of 3:20.69. The relay consisted of Neveh Jones, Chad Jackson l, David Cardenas, and Jonah Vigil.

Miguel Coca had an impressive race in men's  miles as he took control of the race and broke the field house record. Coca had a strong finish and ran a time of 4:11.43 , which was four seconds faster than the original record that was set in 2015. David Cardenas had a stellar performance as well as he stayed focused in the race to finish in second with a time of 4:15.0. Mikah Paiz also had a good race as he fed off of the top pack as he finished fourth with a time of 4:27.31, followed by Joaquin Herrera who finished fifth with a time of 4:27.78.
 
In Men's 3,000 meters Awet Beraki  represented the grizzlies well as he took control of the race. Beraki kept pushing the lead as he had a 22- second lead. Beraki finished overall with a time of 8:27.55.
 
After a day of remarkable efforts, the Grizzlies will be back on the track on January 14th as they will travel to Boulder, Colorado to compete at Potts Invitational.
