WBB | Grizzlies sweep season series with close win

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies hosted the Fort Lewis Skyhawks in the final home games for the Grizzlies. In the first matchup between the two, the Grizzlies won in a buzzer beater by Kayla Harris. This game came down to the same result with the Grizzlies winning 58-56.

The Fort Lewis Skyhawks had something to prove and came out playing like it. From tip-off, the Skyhawks took a 9-0 lead against the Grizzlies. Even though it took awhile for the Grizzlies to turn their aggressive defense on, the Grizzlies almost immediately came back and tied the game. The Skyhawks and Grizzlies exchanged baskets and ended the first quarter 15-13.

The second quarter started and the Grizzlies slowly started to pull away. The Grizzlies defense held Sydney Candelaria to only ten in the first half. The score going into halftime was 30-23 with the Grizzlies up.

The third quarter started and Candeleria came alive for the Skyhawks, however, so did Kayla Harris. Harris offense was on fire as she was close to beating her career high. Defense was the name of the game as both team had to fight to make sure the other wouldn't run away with the game.

Entering the fourth quarter, the game looked as if the Grizzlies were running away with it. This was not the case as the Skyhawks went on a 13-0 run to tie the game. With five minutes left in the game, the Grizzlies and the Skyhawks battled hard. This game looked just like the previous game with the two teams when they played at Fort Lewis. The game went down to the wire again, and just like last time Kayla Harris came to save the game. Her two free throws with nine seconds left secured the win for the Grizzlies. The final score of the game was 58-56. Kayla Harris finished with her career high of 18. She broke her previous record of 16, which was made during the last game against Fort Lewis.

Up next, the Grizzlies host rivals Western Colorado in what will be senior night for the Grizzlies. This will be a hard-fought game as both teams need this victory for playoff position.
