ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies hosted Western Colorado in a vital game for both teams in their pursuit of making the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) tournament. Led by senior
Stephanie Ruiz, who scored 15 points, the Grizzlies swept the season series with the Mountaineers with a 61-49 win.
Senior night is always a special night for the Grizzlies. For the past two years, the Grizzlies have won on senior night so they were fighting to keep that tradition up. Aside from Ruiz, the Grizzlies honored
Kaitlyn Bell, Hayley Eaves and
Kaela McClure.
From tip-off, the Grizzlies were aggressive, fast, and physical. The Grizzlies came out and the team and Plachy Hall were fired up. The scored 20 points in the first quarter and held the Mountaineers to 12.
However, the second quarter appeared to be a lot slower. The Grizzlies' and Mountaineers' defense took over. Neither team scored double digits in the second quarter. Western Colorado scored nine points and held the Grizzlies to eight. The score going into halftime was 28-21.
The Grizzlies continued to apply pressure to the Mountaineers for the rest of the game. The Mountaineers would inch closer, but never had enough to surpass the Grizzlies. Adams State scored 14 points in the third quarter and held the Mountaineers to 11.
The biggest lead for the Grizzlies was 14 points, but the Mountaineers lessened that lead to four points. After that, the Grizzlies held and added to the lead. The Grizzlies defense was the name of the game as they finished the game with 19 steals. The final score of the game was 61-49. It was the perfect way to send of the seniors in their last home game for the Grizzlies.
