ALBURQUERQUE, N.M.—The Adams State University softball team opened the 2022 campaign with a bang on Saturday here at the Albuquerque Regional Sports Complex as Adams State scored 12 runs in the first inning of the day to earn a 1-1 start to the season. The Grizzlies defeated Eastern New Mexico 13-0 in five innings and fell to Western New Mexico, 9-4.
Game 1: Adams State 13, Eastern New Mexico 0 – 5 innings
The Grizzlies opened the new campaign with a bang as they sent 16 players to the plate in the bottom of the first inning with 12 runs crossing home plate.
The Grizzlies saw
Jade Garbiso and
Belinda Vargas with three RBI in the inning as Vargas hit a two-run home run and an RBI triple down the left field line and Garbiso had three-run double. In the inning, Adams State had four extra base hits with
Breck Smith getting into the home run action with two-run blast. The Grizzlies were patient at the plate as they saw 59 pitches by the Grayhounds and drew five walks.
The Grizzlies added one more run in the bottom of the second inning on a sac fly.
The Grizzly pitching staff of
Taylor Sandoval and
Tayler Duncan pitched a shutout by surrendering runs and two walks. Sandoval got the win for her 36 pitches she threw in three innings.
Game 2: Western New Mexico 9, Adams State 4
The Mustangs took advantage of singles and walks to jump out to a 6-0 lead with three runs in the top of third and fourth innings. The Grizzlies were able to scratch a single run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth.
Adams State scored three runs in the sixth inning but couldn't come back.

The Grizzlies will stay in New Mexico on Sunday to take on the University of Texas Permian Basian and Western New Mexico.
