ALAMOSA, Colo.—The Adams State University Grizzly softball team was able to pull off a doubleheader sweep of the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls with scores of 11-4 and 6-5 in eight innings. The games were non-conference affairs.
GAME 1: Adams State 11, New Mexico Highlands 4
The Game started rough for the Grizzlies as the surrendered four runs, three of them unearned, in the top of the third inning before their bats came alive.
Adams State put together five hits and four walks to score nine runs. The big blast came from
Belinda Vargas, who hit her second inside-the-park home run in as many games, this one was a grand slam to make the score 9-4.
The Grizzlies added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 11-4.
Adams State had eight hits in the game while walking six times and only stranding three on the base paths. The Cowgirls had eight hits and three walks but stuck out six times and stranded eight runners on the bases.
GAME 2: Adams State 6, New Mexico 5 (8 inn.)
The second game became the
Jade Garbiso show as she not only tossed a stealer game, but she also was nearly perfect at the plate.
The Game started with a scoreless first inning before the Cowgirls scored one in the second and one in the third to count as the only tallies either team would make until the bottom of the fifth.
Garbiso, who had drawn two walks in her first two at bats, took the first pitch she saw to dead left field where a home run was emphasized by the clang off of the scoreboard to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
The bottom of the sixth inning saw both
Kylea Wall and Angelline Mitchell hit sacrifice flies to take a 3-2 lead before the Cowgirls scored three runs, all on RBI singles, to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs and Garbiso on base,
Breck Smith came to bat and on the third pitch she saw she loaded up a fly ball to dead centerfield that nearly made an appearance in the Rio Grande beyond the outfield fences.
After a scoreless top of the eighth inning, Garbiso knocked in the game-winning run all the way from first on a walk-off double.
Garbiso, who earned a no-decision, fired seven innings of work where she surrendered ten hits, five runs on three walks. Offensively, she was 3-for-3 with a double and a home run and two walks, scored two runs and had two RBI.
Jasmine Garbiso earned the run for her one inning of work where she surrendered one hit and two walks to load the bases. She was able to tightrope out of danger.
