TF | Grizzlies cap off Maverick Open at CMU

Grand Junction, Colo.—The Adams State Track and Field team had a great weekend at the Maverick Multi &Open as multiple Grizzlies hit provisional national qualifying marks.

Day 1

Reina Paredes set the tone for the Grizzlies as she made an appearance for the first time in the women's 10,000 meters. Paredes had a stellar race as she stayed on pace to run a provisional time for nationals in the event. Paredes stayed on pace to take the win with a time of 36:02.28.

In the men's 10,000 meters, Aron Orar finished third overall as he stayed on pace to run 30:44.23, followed by Elijah De La Cerda, who made an appearance in this race for the first time and ran a time of 31:04.78. Yonas Haile also competed in this event and ran a strong race as he ran 31:15.40.

Sam Dirkes had an impressive performance in the men's discus as his throw sets him in the position to be in the top five in the nation. Dirkes finished first overall with a throw of 53.70 meters. Jordan Larson also competed in this event and finished sixth overall with a throw of 47.57 meters, followed by John Hochanadel in seventh with 46.27 meters. James Waddles showed great efforts in this event as well as he threw 37.09 meters.

Day 2

Amalia Dorion showed great efforts in the women's 5,000 meters to start the day. Dorian finished second overall as she closed well the last 400-meters to run a time of 18:03.22. Paige Morales also had a good race as she worked her way through to finish tenth overall with a time of 19:19.26.

Stepping down in distance Brianna Robles ran a new personal best in the women's 1500 meters. Robles had a solid finish to run a provisional mark for nationals with a time of 4:27.83. Fiona Hawkins ran an intelligent race as she stayed close to the pack as she finished third overall with a time of 4:32.41, followed by Morgan Hykes in fourth (4:32.93), Sarah Wills in fifth (4:36.17), and Franziska Althaus in 11th (4:46.53). Jaden Johnson ran a new personal best as she stayed strong during her race to run a 4:56.93.

Ava O'Connor ran a tough race in the women's 800 meters as she finished first overall with a time of 2:11.02, followed by Nicole Lawrence, who finished second with a time of 2:11.89. Hykes and Wills stepped back into the track, competed in this event, and set new personal records. Hykes finished in fourth as she ran a 2:13.04 and Wills finished sixth with a time of 2:13.72. Jessica Simon was a fierce competitor in the woman's 400 meters as she took first overall with a time of 56.05.

Emily Schoellkopf led wire to wire in the woman's 3,000 meter steeple as she ran a time of 11:13.59, followed by Lawrence, who competed in this event for the first time and ran a time of 11:19.52. Erin Stonebarger also competed in this event and showed great effort as she finished third with a time of 11:39.82.

Hykes, O'Connor, Wills, and Simon stepped back into the track to compete in the 4x400 meter relay as they finished sixth overall with a time of 4:01.22.

On the sprints side, Alese Sartain competed in the women's 100-meter dash as she finished second overall with 12.34. Caylen Gomez also competed in this event and ran a time of 12.99. Next, Sartain stepped back on the track to compete in the women's 200 meters and finished fourth with a time of 24.98.

On the men's side, Elias Perez competed in the 5,000 meters as he ran a time of 15:52.14, followed by Jacob Wheat, who ran a time of 15:54.43. The Grizzlies covered most of the field in the men's 1500 meters. Miguel Coca ran an intelligent race and pushed the pace the last 400 meters of the race as he was able to hold off the competition and finish first overall with a time of 3:46.10. James Dunne finished second (3:46.97), David Cardenas third (3:48.32), Andrew O'Keefe fifth (3:49.41), Alec Hall sixth (3:50.22), Clement Duigou seventh (3:52.10), Kale Adams eighth (3:51.38), Mikah Paiz ninth (3:52.46), and Connor Neufeld- Griffin 10th ( 3:53.88).

Cardenas stepped back on the track and competed in the men's 800 meters as he finished second overall with a time of 1:51.42. O'Keefe also competed in this event as he ran 1:53.48, followed by Abdi Abade, who ran 1:58.61.

Leroy Elliott led the field in the men's 110-meter hurdles as he ran a time of 14.27, followed by Jordan Spencer, who finished second with a time of 14.78. Neveh Jones showed great efforts in the men's 400-meter hurdles as he finished second overall with a time of 54.38. Michael Fonseca also competed in this event as he finished seventh overall with 58.37.

Jordan Spencer competed in the men's triple jump and finished second overall with a leap of 14.72 meters. In the men's shot put, James Hochanadel took sixth with a throw of 15.82 meters, followed by Sam Dirkes seventh (15.47 meters), John Hochanadel eighth ( 14.58 meters), and James Waddles in ninth (14:32 meters).

The Grizzlies had a great weekend in Grand Junction and will be back on track next week as they will travel to New Mexico to compete at the University of New Mexico Spring Invite on April 7th.
