ALAMOSA, Colo.—Defensive errors and stranded runners doomed the Adams State University softball team on Saturday as the visiting CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves were able to capitalize and take both games of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) doubleheader. They won the first game 10-4 and the second game 12-9.
GAME 1: CSU Pueblo 10, Adams State 4
The Grizzlies had six defensive errors in the opening day that helped highlight a ThunderWolves three-run top of the fourth inning and a five-run top of the seventh inning en route to the win.
Both teams scored in the first inning before Bishop doubled to right center to give them a lead. Adams State was able to cut back to one run in the fifth inning after a single up the middle and a
Breck Smith single to right field to make the score 5-4.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the wheels came off the bus allowing all the runs to score. Adams State was able to load the bases but could not score stranding seven runners on the basepaths.
GAME 2: CSU Pueblo 12, Adams State 9
The second game was much closer as the ThunderWolves took an early lead with a three-run second inning and never trailed as they scored in every inning except the seventh. A four-run sixth inning was the gut punch for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies scored single runs in the first three innings and cut the lead to two, 8-6 with a three-run fifth inning that included an
Angeline Mitchell inside-the-park home run to right field. Adams State scored two runs in the sixth including a RBI triple by Savanah Hoisington before once again loading the bases in the seventh and the tying run reaching base via a walk by Kaylea Wall.
The Grizzlies saw 15 runners stranded on the bases in the game to make the two-game total 22.
