SB | Grizzly, Wall homers lead to sweep of Eagles

CHADRON, Neb. – The Adams State University Grizzly softball team needed some extra innings but behind five home runs including three by Kylea Wall, they ultimately came away with a sweep over the Chadron State College Eagles on Saturday at the CSC Softball Field. The Grizzlies won 13-11 and 8-3.
 
ASU improved to 11-26 (6-20 RMAC) and took sole ownership of 10th. The Eagles (6-32, 5-21 RMAC) fell into a tie with New Mexico Highlands for 11th place in the league standings.
 
GAME 1: Adams State 13, Chadron State 11 (10 inn.)
After allowing a run to score in the bottom of the first inning, Adams State rebounded with a five-run top of the second inning that was buoyed by a three-run bomb to left center before Syndey Muniz and Breck Smith had RBI singles to make the score 5-1.
 
Another three Eagles crossed home plate in the third to cut the lead back down to just one run at 5-4. Muniz doubled home Emma Wilder before Vargas singled in Muniz to make the score 7-4. The two teams continued to battle with Jasmine Garbiso earning a single up the middle for two runs and Smith scoring on a passed ball.
 
The game remained tied after Paige Propp and Lauren Zimmerman laced together a single and an RBI double, respectively, in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings at 10-10.
 
In the eighth and ninth innings, things quieted down, with only one base hit between the two teams after 31 combined among the teams in regulation.
 
Four hits in five at-bats, with only one out in the 10th, produced three runs for the Grizzlies in the final inning. Smith doubled down the left field line to score Jade Garbiso before a groundout allowed Muniz to score and Alyssa Alvarez singled to the pitcher to score pinch runner Kelty Key.
 
CSC managed only a solo homer, by Propp, giving ASU the 13-10 win.
 
Jasmine Garbiso improved to 4-4 on the season with the pitching win. CSC's Gabby Russell fell to 1-6.
 
GAME 2: Adams State 8, Chadron State 3
The pace of the afternoon game was quicker. Through two innings, neither team scored and both were held to just a single hit.
 
In the third, Wall led off the top of the inning with a solo home run, giving the Grizzlies a lead they never relinquished.
 
With one out in the fourth, Adams State strung together five straight hits including Wall's third homer of the day, a towering two-run shot to left center. They also got an RBI double from Ruby Cota, who was thrown out trying to take third on the throw to home plate.
 
CSC answered with back-to-back homers by pinch-hitter Mackenzi Kroll and Chloe Brown, in the bottom of the inning, netting three runs to close it to 4-3.
 
ASU put three more across in the fifth inning, putting four hits on the board including a two-run dinger by Smith. The Grizzlies also received a pair of free bases from getting hit by pitches, and they left the bases loaded on the third out.
 
Mariah Madrid tacked on a solo home run in the seventh to put her team on top 8-3.
 
Jade Garbiso earned her second win of the season, improving to 2-8, while CSC's Kenzi Garner received the loss to go to 3-8 on the season.

Despite a less than favorable weather forecast, the Eagles and Grizzlies will try to play another doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
