SILVER CITY, N.M. -- Western New Mexico scored 17 unanswered points and went on to a 34-20 win over Adams State in the Grizzlies' first game of the season.
WNMU quarterback Devin Larsen threw two of his three touchdowns in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the game. One of those went to Vincent Rankin, and the other went to Charles Byers.
ASU's
Xzavier Crawford scored on a 3-yard run early in the second quarter, but the Grizzlies answered with Larsen's third touchdown toss. This one went to Edwin Lacrosse and covered 10 yards.
Quarterback
Mark Salazar and receiver
Elijah Harper connected for an 18-yard scoring play in the fourth quarter. Salazar also found
Quinlin Bisbee for a 7-yard touchdown pass with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The Grizzlies held the Grizzlies to 66 rushing yards and an average of 3 yards per carry. Salazar completed 21 of 43 passes for 173 yards with the two touchdowns and two picks. Harper caught a team-high six passes for 70 yards for ASU.
Aaron Johnson added five receptions for 44 yards.Â
Larsen completed 21 of his 32 passes for the Rawhide and the three scores. David Telles had seven receptions for Western New Mexico University for 64 yards.
Edward McClendon and
Daniel Mendoza led the defense for ASU with 10 total tackles,
Robert Woods was next with six.Clavon Caine and Kaleb Gutierrez led WNMU with six tackles.
The Grizzlies get back to work at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, for their home opener against West Texas A&M University.
