WBB | Grizzlies earn RMAC-opening win over Mountaineers

GUNNISON, Colo.—Despite being outscored in the fourth quarter, the game-winning shot, a three-pointer from Harmanie Dominguez with 1:37 remaining, was again just enough for the Grizzlies to collect a narrow 71-69 win over the Western Colorado University Mountaineers on Friday night. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-opener took place at Paul Wright Gym.

With the win, the Grizzlies are now on a three-game winning streak with a two-game sweep over the University of Alaska Anchorage last weekend. They have won all three of those games by a combined four points. They improve to 6-3 overall on the season and are 1-0 in the RMAC.

Just looking at how big a scoring margin the Mountaineers had in the fourth quarter, nine points as they outscored the Grizzlies 21-12 in the frame, and you would think Western Colorado had the game in hand. However, a key 9-2 run over 1:38 in the quarter that saw the Grizzlies hit 4-of-4 from the field including five from junior Elaina Watson made the score 68-61.

Western Colorado finished the game on an 8-3 run that included six points from Natalie Jojoja and a 5-of-6 showing from the free throw line. After Dominguez's deep three, the Mountaineers then missed three 3-point shots in the final 1:13 let the game slip from their grasp.

The game saw Adams State jump out to a 22-12 lead after one quarter before trailing 40-38 at the break.

In the game, Adams State shot 29-of-69 (42 percent) from the field. Of those 29 shots ten came from beyond the arch. As a team the Grizzlies only reached the free throw line six times and converted on three of those.

Dominguez was the leading scorer with 21 points as she was 8-of-15 from the field including five 3-pointers. Watson was 6-of-15 from the field and hit all three free throws for the Grizzlies to finish with 17 points while RiRi Davis was 4-of-8 from the field and 2-fo-4 from beyond the arch for ten points.

Adams State will return to action at Fort Lewis College on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m..

They will then host CSU Pueblo (Fri., Dec. 8th at 5:30 p.m.), New Mexico Highlands (Sat. Dec. 9th at 5:30 p.m.), and Colorado Mesa (Fri., Dec. 15 at 3:30 p.m.).
