GUNNISON, Colo. — Both the men's and women's track and field teams had a great day in the Mountaineer Open. Both teams had several top 3 finishes and boasted multiple marks that will qualify them for the indoor national championships in March.
On the men's side John Hochanadel placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 17.39m and Sam Dirkes won the shot put with a mark of 16.85m. Kidus Bigshaw placed 3rd in the 5000m run with a time of 15:10.12 and Tyman Smart placed 6th in the 3000m run with a time of 9:12.26. Jonah Vigil won the men's 400m and set a new meet and facility record with a time of 47.68 and was followed by teammates Neveh Jones (50.77) , Jawarren Smith (50.85), and Elijah Hatcher (51.47) in 4th, 5th, and 7th. In the mile Nathan Scherbarth placed 4th with a time of 4:29.85 and was followed by teammates Carmelo Corral (4:30.95) in 5th, Zak Beckwith (4:35.34) in 9th, and Kien Cogley (4:41.45) in 11th.
On the women's side Alena Chaney placed 4th in the long jump with a mark of 5.38m and she also won the 60mh with a time of 8.85. Vienna Lahner (5:15.92) and Nicole Lawrence (5:18.27) placed 3rd and 4th in the mile. Jessica Simon won the 800m dash with a time of 2:13.78 and 5 grizzlies placed in the top 10 in the 3000m run. Bri Robles won the 3000m run with a time of 9:46.31, setting the meet and facility record and was followed by Precious Robinson (10:00.90) in second, Maggie McCleskey (10:11.19) in 4th, Amalia Dorian (10:36.94) in 6th, and Haley Harkrider (11:14.53) in 10th. The round off the meet the grouping of Alese Sartain, Sierra Velarde, Avery Palmgren, and Jada Miller ran the 4x400m dash and finished with a time of 3:56.80, besting the field by nearly 14 seconds.
