ALAMOSA, Colo. – In a wire-to-wire victory, the No. 8 ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks secured a decisive 99-71 win over the Adams State University Grizzlies, concluding Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action inside the Den at Plachy Hall for the 2023 year on Friday night.
With this loss, ASU's overall record dropped to 3-8, and their conference standing fell to 1-4, while CMU advanced to an impressive 8-1 overall and maintained an undefeated 5-0 record in the RMAC.
CMU's redshirt junior Mac Riniker showcased a stellar performance, scoring a game-high 20 points on an impressive 9-for-11 shooting. Three other Mavericks contributed significantly to the balanced onslaught, with Owen Koonce scoring 18 points, Trevor Baskin and Aidan Kuhl both played well, chipping in 13 points each.
Despite a resilient effort, the Grizzlies faced a tough shooting night, with a 37.1 percent (26-70) mark.
The Mavericks established dominance early, leading 51-30 at halftime and extending their lead to 34 (68-34) at the first media timeout of the second half. Riniker's impressive performance further widened the gap to 36 (75-39) with just over 12 minutes remaining, ultimately leading CMU to a commanding 28-point victory.
Luke Williams emerged as the leading scorer for the Grizzlies with 15 points, closely followed by
Destan Williams with 12 points and another
Kolby Walker with 10 points.
Looking ahead, the Grizzlies will face an exhibition game inside Hamilton Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Denver, where they will take on the Pioneers on Monday with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Dec. 18. Subsequently, they will travel to Fort Collins to challenge Colorado State University on Friday, Dec. 29, at 7:00 p.m. in another exhibition game. They will then resume RMAC action on Friday, Jan. 5, at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Black Hills State.
