WBB | Grizzlies extend streak as they end another

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) witnessed thrilling moments as the Adams State University women's basketball team concluded the 2023 segment of the season with an impressive 73-65 victory over the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Friday afternoon inside Plachy Hall. The win marked the Grizzlies' seventh consecutive triumph and also ended a challenging 22-game losing streak against the Mavericks dating back to 2011.

Adams State's overall record now stands at 10-3, with a flawless 5-0 performance in RMAC play, placing them in close contention with Colorado School of Mines, who share the same conference record at 5-0. The Orediggers, currently on an eight-game winning streak, secured a 65-64 victory over the MSU Denver Roadrunners on Friday night. The Grizzlies' seven-game winning streak is their longest since the impressive nine-game stretch from Feb. 4, 2011, to March 1, 2011.

Capitalizing on their strong performance, Adams State demonstrated dominance over Colorado Mesa, particularly in fast-break points, outscoring them 21-1. The Grizzlies capitalized on 21 Maverick turnovers, converting them into 14 points off turnovers, while commendably limiting their own turnovers to just six throughout the game.

The third quarter proved pivotal for Adams State as they outscored the Mavericks 18-9, establishing their largest lead of 23 points at 56-33 with 2:14 remaining in the quarter. Despite a late surge by the Mavericks in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to six points at 65-59 with 3:40 remaining, the Grizzlies managed to maintain their composure and secure the win.

Leading the charge for Adams State, sophomore Harmanie Dominguez delivered an outstanding performance with 23 points, shooting 6-of-16 from the field, including four three-pointers, and going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Elaina Watson and Riri Davis contributed 13 points each to the Grizzlies' overall score, as the squad shot 26-of-62, made seven three-pointers, and displayed efficiency from the free-throw line at 14-of-16.

Despite their victory, Adams State faced a challenge on the boards, being outrebounded by the Mavericks 49-28.

Adams State will now enjoy a 21-day hiatus before returning to action on Friday, Jan. 5, when they face Black Hills State on the road. Their next home game at Plachy Hall is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 19, where they will host Colorado Christian University.
