TF| Grizzly men finish third, women 6th at Nationals

PUEBLO, Colo.— Controversy surrounded the 5,000-meter run and despite that the Adams State University men's track and field team held their heads and a third place trophy high on Saturday night here at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl. The women finished in sixth place.

Despite confusion in the final lap of the 5,000-meter run, junior Awet Beraki was able to hold on for his first ever Division II championship. The confusion happened in the final two laps of the race as the bell was run signaling the final lap when in reality there were still two laps remaining. As the lap went on senior Devonte Jett-Reynolds ran a 60-second lap to pull into either second or third place believing he was done. As everyone realized the mistake, Jett-Reynods was unable to continue at the pace but finished the race with a 2:53 final lap in 18th place. Immediately, after the race, Coach Damon Martin and several other coaches protested the results.

After dust settled, it was ruled that the results would stand, however, it is believed the result is still correctable and can be overruled. Should such a ruling come down, it will be posted on ASUGrizzlies.com

Also running the race was Miguel Coach who finished in 14:43.92 for tenth place while Cameron Allan finished in 12th place in 14:51.91. Clement Duigou did not finish.

The day started with sophomore Sam Dirkes tossing a 17.38-meter throw in the shot put to finish in tenth place.

In the women's 1,500-meter run, junior Nicole Lawrence ran a 4:44.81 to finish in 11th place.

Senior Miguel Coca ran a stron 1,500-meter run but was just nipped by Colorado School of Mines' Luke Julian. Coca's time of 3:54.16 earned eight team points.
