Adams State Flashes Potential in 52-10 Loss to Colorado Mesa

Alamosa, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies faced a tough challenge at Rex Field, falling to Colorado Mesa 52-10 as their difficult season continues. The Grizzlies (0-6, 0-4 RMAC) struggled to keep up with the Mavericks (4-2, 3-1 RMAC), who capitalized on a strong ground game and big plays.

The game started with Colorado Mesa taking an early lead after Coby May's 21-yard field goal on the opening drive. In the second quarter, the Mavericks extended their lead with two touchdowns, including a 71-yard pass from Liu Aumavae to Quezon Villa. A late first-half touchdown put Adams State in a 24-0 hole at the break.

The Grizzlies sparked some momentum in the third quarter when Ahmare Merrida broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run. But hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed as Noah Greer returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, restoring the Mavericks' commanding lead.

Brysen Gardner added a 32-yard field goal for the Grizzlies later in the third quarter, but it would be their final points of the day. Colorado Mesa tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Defensively, Seth Shaw led Adams State with 11 tackles, while Christian Toeleiu contributed six tackles and a tackle for loss. Aaron Cyrus made an early impact with a first-quarter interception, though the Grizzlies couldn't convert the turnover into points. Christopher Williams added another interception in the second quarter, but a fumble shortly afterward kept Adams State scoreless heading into halftime.

While the defense made some key plays, costly penalties and the inability to generate pressure allowed Colorado Mesa to maintain control. The Grizzlies showed glimpses of promise, but will face off next week against Colorado School of Mines,
