Alamosa, Colo. – Adams State (0-7, 0-5 RMAC) faced off against the No. 12 Colorado School of Mines (6-1, 4-1 RMAC) on Saturday afternoon, falling 56-14 as the Orediggers racked up 638 yards of total offense.
The Grizzlies kept pace early, answering Mines' opening touchdown with a quick five-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a Chase Nelson 11-yard touchdown pass to Noel Moreno, tying the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.
However, the Orediggers seized control from that point on, using a balanced attack to pull away. Landon Walker's 11-yard rushing touchdown and Braelon Tate's 24-yard score gave Mines a 14-7 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Adams State's Alex Reid hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Alexander Grado late in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to 35-14 heading into halftime. Reid led all Grizzlies receivers with 109 yards on seven catches. Mines quarterback Evan Foster threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns, including two long strikes to Flynn Schiele.
The Grizzlies' defense had some bright spots, despite the Orediggers' offensive onslaught. Traivian Denesto made a key interception in the second quarter, halting a Mines drive in the end zone. Ren Meafua recorded a tackle for loss, and Jahsai Shannon broke up a critical pass to prevent a completion. However, Mines' balanced attack proved too much, with big plays through the air and on the ground.
The second half belonged to Colorado School of Mines, as they extended their lead with two third-quarter touchdowns. Foster connected with Jack Walters and Max McLeod for scores, while running back Joseph Capra added a 14-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Adams State finished with 310 total yards, compared to Mines' 638. Grado and Nelson combined for 269 passing yards and two touchdowns, but the Grizzlies were under constant pressure throughout the game. The running game was stifled, managing only 41 yards on 26 attempts. Penalties at critical moments further disrupted Adams State's offensive rhythm, with false starts and an illegal motion penalty stalling key drives. Although Mines accrued more penalty yards, their offensive efficiency allowed them to overcome those setbacks.
Adams State will travel to face New Mexico Highlands next weekend, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. The Cowboys' sole win this season was a 33-30 victory over Chadron State in early October.
