Grizzlies Shine with Big Plays but Fall to New Mexico Highlands in Close Contest

Las Vegas, N.M. — The Adams State Grizzlies' late comeback attempt fell short Saturday as New Mexico Highlands pulled away with a 44-27 victory at Sanchez Family Stadium. The Grizzlies remain winless, dropping to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in RMAC play, while the Cowboys improved to 2-6 and 2-4 in the conference.

The Grizzlies started strong, seizing an early lead in the second quarter when quarterback Chase Nelson found an opening and sprinted downfield for an exhilarating 24-yard touchdown. The play marked a turning point in the game, lifting Adams State to a 7-3 lead and sparking energy on the sidelines. The Cowboys, however, countered with a nine-play, 72-yard drive, culminating in a rushing touchdown by Tevita Valeti. Despite falling behind 10-7 at halftime, Adams State exited the locker room poised to keep the game close.

The Grizzlies opened the second half with renewed momentum, as Aaron Johnson ignited the fans and his team with a dazzling 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, putting Adams State back on top. The explosive play demonstrated the Grizzlies' big-play potential and their refusal to back down. New Mexico Highlands, however, leaned on their physical ground game, with Valeti scoring two additional third-quarter touchdowns to give the Cowboys a 23-13 advantage.

Entering the fourth quarter down by 17 points, the Grizzlies faced an uphill battle but showed their resolve. Running back Ahmare Merrida charged through Highlands' defense on a tough 9-yard run, narrowing the gap to 30-20 and giving Adams State a fighting chance in the closing minutes. Yet, the Cowboys responded with back-to-back scores, including a 5-yard run from Joey Cave and a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Waika Crawford to receiver Camerson Swain, to extend their lead.

The Grizzlies' defense played with determination, fighting to keep Adams State in the game against a relentless Highlands rushing attack. Linebacker Christian Toeleiu anchored the defense with an impressive 12 tackles and a critical interception in the first quarter, setting up the offense with favorable field position. Defensive linemen Maxime Anum and Zachary Ray also provided key stops, each registering tackles for loss, and helped contain the Cowboys' passing game with solid pressure at the line.

Despite the scoreboard, Adams State continued to play with heart. Nelson added a second rushing touchdown late in the game, reflecting the Grizzlies' refusal to go quietly. Their performance was punctuated by several standout efforts, as they battled until the final whistle.

Though the Grizzlies' effort fell short as New Mexico Highlands leveraged the ground game and ball control to secure the victory, Adams State will look to bounce back as they face Fort Lewis next week for the Hall of Fame game.
