Alamosa, Colo. –– The Adams State Grizzlies put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell to the Fort Lewis Skyhawks in a 27-17 defeat on Saturday evening. The Grizzlies, still seeking their first win of the season, battled back multiple times but couldn't overcome Fort Lewis' steady offensive pressure and clutch plays in the second half.
The game opened with a defensive standoff, as both teams struggled to gain early momentum. Fort Lewis struck first with a 22-yard field goal by Hunter Villavicencio midway through the first quarter, but Adams State responded as kicker Brysen Gardner converted his own 22-yarder, tying the game at 3-3 with just 31 seconds remaining in the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Skyhawks began to assert themselves. Running back Jamille Humphrey powered his way to a 5-yard touchdown, giving Fort Lewis a 10-3 advantage. However, Adams State quickly answered back. Quarterback Alexander Grado orchestrated a five-play, 60-yard drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Aaron Johnson, leveling the score at 10-10. The Grizzlies' defensive unit held strong, forcing a missed 39-yard field goal attempt by Fort Lewis as the half ended, keeping Adams State firmly in the contest.
The third quarter shifted the game's momentum in favor of Fort Lewis. Quarterback Stone Walker showcased his dual-threat ability, capping an 11-play, 70-yard drive with a 6-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Skyhawks a 17-10 lead. A defensive struggle ensued as both teams were forced into punts and fumbles, but Adams State's offense couldn't find rhythm to counter Walker's score.
The fourth quarter opened with another Fort Lewis field goal by Villavicencio, extending their lead to 20-10. Yet, Adams State wasn't done. The Grizzlies mounted a 75-yard drive that culminated in a 10-yard touchdown run by Ahmare Merrida, pulling Adams State within three points, 20-17, with just over ten minutes to play. But Fort Lewis responded swiftly, with Walker connecting on a 43-yard touchdown pass to running back Orlando Guevara, widening their lead to 27-17.
The Grizzlies tried to rally one last time but were ultimately thwarted by a turnover and a blocked field goal attempt that sealed their fate. Despite the loss, Adams State's defense delivered several bright spots, highlighted by linebacker Christian Toeleiu, who recorded a team-high 14 tackles. Defensive back Zachary Ray and freshman linebacker Ren Meafua also added crucial stops, with Ray contributing six tackles and a quarterback hurry.
With this loss, Adams State drops to 0-9 on the season, while Fort Lewis improves to 2-7. The Grizzlies will look to regroup as they prepare to take on Black Hills State on the road next Saturday.
