Adams State Earns First Clean Sheet Since 2017 in 0-0 Draw with South Dakota Mines

Alamosa, Colo. – In a fiercely contested match, Adams State and South Dakota Mines played to a 0-0 draw Sunday at ASU Soccer Field. Despite several close chances and a combined total of 22 shots, neither team broke through the defenses.

Both teams had opportunities throughout the match, with Adams State attempting nine shots, three of which were on goal. Ranulfo Lopez led the Grizzlies' attack, firing five shots and hitting the target three times, but he was repeatedly denied by South Dakota Mines' goalkeeper Daniel Freitas, who finished with three saves to secure the clean sheet.

South Dakota Mines pressed hard in the second half, increasing their shot count to nine, but JP Fernandez stood tall for the Grizzlies, making three crucial saves to preserve the shutout. This marked the first clean sheet of Fernandez's career and the first for Adams State since 2017.

"Happy with the response we had today after Thursday's game, so on a positive note, we're back to playing well," said the coach. "We just need to fine-tune the final third, and we'll be okay. First clean sheet in a long time here, so a big win in that aspect from our back line and goalkeeper. At the end of the day, we got a point, and that's putting us in a good position to finalize points and be there at the end."

The match was physical, with both sides combining for 26 fouls, and four yellow cards were issued. Adams State's Mario Alejo received a caution in the 58th minute, while the Hardrockers had three players booked during the encounter.

Adams State's record moves to 2-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play, while South Dakota Mines now stands at 1-7-2 overall and 1-1-2 in RMAC action. The Grizzlies will be back in action Thursday, when they hit the road to take on CSU Pueblo.
