Alamosa, Colo. – Adams State University (4-14, 1-6 RMAC) dropped a hard-fought match against Colorado Christian University (11-6, 5-2 RMAC) on Friday evening at Plachy Hall. The Grizzlies were swept 3-0 in a contest that saw competitive play but ended with set scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-21 in favor of the visiting Cougars.
Adams State's Cindy Garcia led the way offensively with 18 kills and a .368 hitting percentage, contributing a total of 18.5 points for the Grizzlies. Anna Huggins added 7 kills, while Hadleigh Richardson chipped in with 6 kills and a .211 hitting percentage.
Despite strong individual performances, the Grizzlies struggled to maintain momentum against the more consistent play of the Cougars, who finished with a .287 hitting percentage. Colorado Christian's Renee Phillips and Abigail Newell both registered 10 kills apiece, with Phillips also contributing 12.5 points.
The first two sets saw Adams State trading points with the Cougars, managing to tie the score 10 times in the opening set alone. However, Colorado Christian capitalized on key errors and surged ahead late in each set to secure the victory. The Grizzlies managed a .256 hitting percentage in the second set, their best of the night, but could not close out a win.
Defensively, Adams State's Remi Vargas and Keely-Shae Sapiga dished out 16 and 8 assists, respectively, while Huggins added 7 digs to her stat line. The Grizzlies recorded 35 total digs as a team.
With the loss, Adams State falls to 1-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Grizzlies play again at home tomorrow, when they take on Chadron State for Senior Day where they will be honoring eight seniors.
