Grizzlies Dominate Fort Lewis in Thrilling 3-1 Victory on the Road

Durango, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies pulled off an exciting 3-1 win (25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14) against Fort Lewis on October 22, 2024, pushing their season record to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in the RMAC.

The Grizzlies came out swinging, taking the first set 25-18, led by Cindy Garcia's 16 kills on 40 attempts and Anna Huggins' 14 kills with a .294 hitting percentage. Their attacking duo helped set the tone early, securing key points that gave Adams State momentum from the start.

In the second set, Fort Lewis pushed back, but the Grizzlies held their ground, edging out a 25-23 win in a closely fought battle. Setters Remi Vargas and Madeleine Benally spread the offense effectively, keeping the Skyhawks on their toes. With big digs from libero Sierra Leone Sanchez and clutch kills from Hadleigh Richardson (10 kills, .370 hitting percentage), Adams State pulled ahead late to claim the set.

Fort Lewis answered in the third set, sneaking out a 25-23 win. Led by Alexis Hobie's 10 kills and Ella Butler's 9 kills, they capitalized on a few Grizzly errors. Even with strong defense from Adams State, including 59 total digs, Fort Lewis found a way to stay alive.

The Grizzlies responded with authority in the fourth, dominating the set 25-14. Katie Bauer and Angela Youngs came up big at the net, contributing a combined 6 kills and 4 blocks, while Vargas tallied 24 assists to guide the offense. Sanchez stayed steady with 10 digs as the Grizzlies wrapped up the win.

Adams State will look to carry this momentum forward as they head into the home stretch of the season. Having dropped a tough 2-3 match to Fort Lewis earlier in the season, the Grizzlies will get another shot at the Skyhawks on November 1 in a neutral-site pod hosted by UC-Colorado Springs.
