Las Vegas, N.M. -- Behind standout performances from
Angelline Nageak and
Kiiyani Anitielu, Adams State earned a hard-fought 72-64 win over New Mexico Highlands on Saturday afternoon.
The Grizzlies (8-5, 3-1 RMAC) controlled the game down the stretch, holding the Cowgirls (5-5, 2-2 RMAC) to just 12 points in the fourth quarter. Nageak led the scoring efforts with 21 points, including three 3-pointers, while Anitielu added 20 points and four assists.
Adams State took an early lead, outscoring Highlands 23-21 in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 38-36 edge. The teams continued to trade baskets throughout the third quarter, but the Grizzlies pulled away late by playing good defense, forcing key turnovers and converting on free throws. Adams State finsihed with 15 steals, led by
Brooke Rodgers' five.
Rodgers also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, hleping the Grizzlies overcome a 40-35 deficit on the boards.
Ri'Ahana Davis contributed eight points and three rebounds, while
Christabel Longe chipped in with four rebounds off the bench.
For the Cowgirls, Kapiolani Anitielu, Kiiyani's younger sister paced Highlands with 23 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to close the gap. Caitlin Turnbow added nine points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
The Grizzlies will take a lengthy break before traveling to Salt Lake City, January 9, for their first game of the new year.
