Grand Junction, Colo. – Adams State faced a tough day 1 on the court Friday with two matches at the Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colorado for the Maverick Classic.
In the first match against Angelo State, the Grizzlies struggled against a seasoned team, losing 25-14, 25-14, 25-16 but there were still standout performances. Freshman Makylee Wilson played efficiently, hitting .308 and contributing four kills and Ariel Barrera added two kills to Adams State's total. Though Angelo State controlled the match, the Grizzlies battled through each set and showed promise in their blocking and serve-receive game.
The second match against Cal State Dominguez Hills was a closer contest, falling 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, Anna Huggins and Ariel Barrera both tallied 10 kills during the match and Angela Youngs contributed nine. Keely-Shae Sapiga tallied 19 digs with Ellie Miller and Anna Huggins adding 12 and 11 digs respectively.
"As a team we are working on improving our ability to figure it out in tough situations and find ways to close out points at a higher level, we are working towards that and that is all that I can ask," said Head Coach Garcia Ramser.
Adams State heads into their day two play at the Maverick Fall Classic tomorrow facing Minnesota State University Moorhead at 11 a.m. and Cal Poly Humbolt at 4 p.m.
