Alamosa, Colo. – In a nail-biting contest, Adams State University earned a hard-fought victory over Black Hills State in a five-set showdown (23-25, 25-12, 25-20, 15-11). The home crowd in Plachy Hall witnessed the Grizzlies secure their first RMAC win of the season, improving to 3-10 overall (1-3 RMAC), while Black Hills State fell to 4-8 (0-4 RMAC).
The match was marked by a series of momentum swings, with both teams exchanging leads and battling fiercely at the net. Adams State rallied after losing the first set, showing resilience and control in the second and third sets, only for Black Hills State to force a decisive fifth set with a fourth-set win.
Adams State was once again led by Ariel Barrera, Hadleigh Richardson, and Anna Huggins, who posted 18, 15, and 13 kills, respectively. Barrera posted an impressive .357 hitting percentage with only three errors on 42 swings. The Grizzlies' defense remained strong throughout the match, with Sierra Leone Sanchez contributing 22 digs and Remi Vargas adding 10.
The fifth set was a tense battle, with both teams trading points until Adams State pulled ahead late with clutch serves and timely kills. With the home crowd on their side, the Grizzlies closed out the match 15-11, securing their much-needed conference win.
"This first conference win is really the first step for us to start seeing results from the effort we want to have in all facets of the program," said Head Coach Garcia Ramser. "Both matches this weekend were by far the most locked in and intense our team has played all season. The home crowd adds some air to our sails too as they brought it just as much as our players. We'll keep trying to improve and put on a good show for everyone. For the sake of our staff's health, it would be great to avoid the five-setters going forward."
Adams State continues its home stint Tuesday, taking on New Mexico Highlands. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
