Portales, N.M. — Adams State men's soccer fell 2-0 to Eastern New Mexico in their season opener on Thursday evening.
Eastern New Mexico struck quickly, with Nick Huenig scoring just 92 seconds into the game, assisted by Ben Sauerländer and Yahir Jimenez. Adams State struggled to gain momentum early, with senior Leonardo Villacorta and junior Tobias Sereinig committing fouls in the first few minutes.
The Grizzlies had a chance in the 10th minute when sophomore Tim Mietenkorte took a shot, but it was not enough to break through. Adams State faced several offside calls and saw junior JP Fernandez receive a yellow card in the first half. Despite his efforts, Fernandez managed one save in his debut as Adams State's goalkeeper.
In the second half, Eastern New Mexico continued to press, with a few shots going wide. Adams State's attempts to equalize were thwarted, including a key save by Eastern New Mexico goalkeeper Milo Paci on sophomore Kaden Reese's shot in the 60th minute. Adams State also struggled with corner kicks in the 71st and 79th minutes.
The 80th and 81st minutes saw yellow cards issued to juniors Berend Heijmans and Avery Richards, respectively.
The final blow came in the 87th minute when Robin Vandewalle scored for Eastern New Mexico, assisted by Augustine Banhire and Teddy McIntyre. Despite their efforts, Adams State could not mount a comeback, and Eastern New Mexico secured the win.
Adams State was outshot 10-5 and was out-fouled 12-11.
The Grizzlies will play again on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas, facing off against Lubbock Christian.
