Grizzlies split day two at Midwestern State Tournament

Wichita Falls, Texas – Adams State Grizzlies volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, securing a dominant sweep over Western New Mexico in the morning before falling in straight sets to Northwestern Oklahoma State in the afternoon. 

In their first match of the day, the Grizzlies cruised to a decisive 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-15, 25-22) against the Western New Mexico Mustangs. Adams State's offensive efforts were led again by standout performances from Cindy Garcia and Anna Huggins. Garcia racked up 14 kills on a .387 hitting percentages, while Huggins added 11 kills, two aces and .333 hitting percentage. Setter Madeleine Benally orchestrated the attack with 13 assists, and the defense was anchored by Sierra Leone Sanchez, who had 12 digs. 

The Grizzlies held a commanding presence at the net, finishing with a team hitting percentage of .230 while limiting the Mustangs to just .060. Western New Mexico struggled to find offensive rhythm, committing 22 errors, despite 11 kills from Carley Deck. 

Later in the day, Adams State faced a tougher challenge in Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Grizzlies fell in straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-13). Northwestern Oklahoma's aggressive attack proved difficult to counter, with Ivanny Blackwood leading the Rangers with 10 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. The Grizzlies struggled with consistency, committing 27 attack errors and hitting just .020 as a team. 

The second set was the most competitive, featuring four tie scores and two lead changes. Adams State briefly led but was unable to maintain momentum, as Northwestern Oklahoma capitalized on errors and used timely blocking to close out the match. 

With the day's results, Adams State moved to 1-2 on the season. The Grizzlies will play their final game of the Midwestern State Tournament tomorrow at 12 p.m.
