GRAND JUNCTION – Adams State fell to Colorado Mesa 72-49 in a hard-fought matchup at Brownson Arena on January 11, 2025. Despite an early lead in the first quarter, the Grizzlies struggled to keep pace with a sharp-shooting Mavericks team that dominated both ends of the court.
Adams State opened the game with energy, taking an early 6-2 lead within the first few minutes. However, Colorado Mesa responded with a 12-0 scoring run. The Mavericks led 19-8 after the first quarter and extended their lead to 37-23 by halftime.
The Grizzlies shot 32.3% from the field in the first half compared to Colorado Mesa's 55.2%. Turnovers proved costly for Adams State, giving up 10 points to Colorado Mesa's seven from miscues.
Brooke Rodgers led Adams State with 11 points, while Kiiyani Anitielu and Angelline Nageak contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Grizzlies found success in spurts but were unable to sustain momentum against the Mavericks defense.
Adams State showed resilience in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to single digits briefly with a six-point scoring burst. However, Colorado Mesa answered every push with timely baskets, shooting 53.8% in the third quarter alone.
The Grizzlies' shooting woes plagued them throughout the game, converting only 33.9% of their shots overall and struggling at the free-throw line, making just 3-of-7 attempts.
With the loss, Adams State falls to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in RMAC play. Colorado Mesa improves to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Grizzlies will look to bounce back in their next game when they return home to face Chadron State on Thursday.
