Hays, Kan. — The Adams State cross country teams turned in strong performances at the Fort Hays State Open on Saturday, with the women finishing second and the men placing third despite not traveling a full squad. The Grizzlies totaled 58 points on the women's side and 74 on the men's.
Haley Harkrider led the Adams State women with a fourth-place finish, clocking 17 minutes, 36.2 seconds. Lieke Hoogsteen followed in ninth at 18:12.3, while Clara Keddy placed 16th in 18:28.6. Marie Garret finished 21st (18:35.6), and Jazmin Estrada took 24th (18:41.4) to round out the top five scorers for the Grizzlies. Emma Robinson (27th, 18:53.3) and Addison Eyre (31st, 19:11.3) also turned in strong performances to close out the Adams State lineup.
On the men's side, Adams State was led by Nathan Scherbarth, who posted a fifth-place finish in 24:08.9. Gabe Onelio and Thibault Tauziede finished 12th and 13th, respectively, with times of 24:35.9 and 24:36.2. Tyman Smart was the next Grizzly across the line in 19th (24:45.4). Micah Swann finished 25th (25:02.0), followed closely by teammate Jio Herrera in 26th (25:02.1). Kien Cogley rounded out the Grizzlies' scoring with a 33rd-place finish in 25:27.9.
The Grizzlies will now shift their focus to the RMAC Championships, which will be hosted in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Oct. 25. The Adams State women are the reigning RMAC champions and will look to defend their title.
